If you smell gas, immediately put out all smoking materials and any open flames. In addition, don't use any cell phones, landline telephones, appliances or lights as flames or sparks from these sources may cause an explosion or fire. If you smell propane gas that you think might be leaking, you should immediately leave the area and evacuate the building or area where you suspect that gas might be leaking. Once you've left the area, you should try to shut off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank, once it is safe to do so.
Once you've exited the area and are are safely away from the source of the gas smell, you should report the leak from a neighbor's home or other nearby location by calling Backus Oil immediately. If you can't reach your propane retailer, call 911 or your local the local fire department immediately. Above all, don't return to the building until your propane retailer or the fire department has determined that it is safe to do so.
Finally, you should always have a trained and qualified service technician from your local propane retailer perform a complete system check and any of your propane appliances to be sure they are free of leaks before you attempt to use any of them.
